As a team leader or parent, whenever you want to appreciate your team member or kids try to do it in front of other people. It shall not only increase their confidence but earn you their respect also.
When you appreciate someone in public you actually fulfill his needs of the ego. It motivates him to perform better next time. Whether it is 5 years old kid or 50 years old manager this is applicable on all with equal efficacy.
On the other hand, if you have to admonish or scold a child or an employee make sure that you don’t do it in public. Even if they are wrong, make sure that you save their face in public and become their shield in embarrassing circumstances. No matter how much angry you are, if you wish to be a good leader/Parent never ever scold anybody in public. People consider it as their insult. Even a kid will consider it as an insult no matter whether he is unable to convey it or not.
When you find a little private time with the person make him realize that he made a mistake and show him the way to correct it. If you practice this simple principle the world will see a better leader emerging out of you.
